Sherlock Holmes receives a coded warning about a man in danger. Before help can arrive, John Douglas is reported murdered inside his moated country house. The scene appears sealed, the evidence points in several directions, and Professor Moriarty's influence hovers beyond anything the police can prove.
One mystery, two histories
The first part follows Holmes and Watson through the murder investigation at Birlstone Manor. A missing object, a peculiar weapon, and the victim's past make the obvious reconstruction unstable. Holmes concentrates on what had to happen, not what witnesses assume happened.
Then the novel changes continent and time. Part II moves to an American mining valley controlled by intimidation and organised violence. The shift can feel like a second story until names, motives, and old fears begin to align. Doyle uses that delayed history to show that the crime in England did not begin on the night of the murder.
This structure is the point. Solving the locked-room problem explains a sequence of actions; it does not explain why danger travelled so far or why Moriarty remains difficult to reach.
Detection can solve a room, not erase a past
At Birlstone, Holmes tests the physical arrangement against the story suggested by its most dramatic evidence. The drawbridge, window, missing dumbbell, and victim's identity all impose constraints. The solution is satisfying because it accounts for them without accepting the first theatrical appearance of the room.
Yet Doyle refuses to end there. The American section supplies a different kind of explanation, built from intimidation, infiltration, and the long memory of organized violence. Its central figure must live under observation while trying to discover how power operates inside the valley. When the narrative returns to England, the reader understands why a technically solved murder can still belong to an unfinished campaign of revenge.
Moriarty at the edge of the evidence
Professor Moriarty is important precisely because he is difficult to place inside a courtroom-ready chain of proof. Holmes sees a pattern and recognizes the pressure of a larger organization, but recognition is not the same as evidence. The epilogue therefore leaves a deliberate gap between solving the immediate case and defeating the system that helped make it possible.
